Elijah JOHNSON was born in Wilton in 1876 (Thetford Q4-1876 4B:374), the 1st son of Mark and Hannah JOHNSON (née BULLOCK)

1881 census... Aged 4, Elijah was north of Main Street, Wilton, living with his grandfather George Bullock, aunt Melinda Bullock, his father Mark JOHNSON [29] a threshing engine driver born Wilton; mother Hannah [28] born Hockwold and brothers George [2] and Walter [6 months]. The three children were all born in Wilton.

1891 census...Aged 14, he was at North Street with his father (Mother had died in 1885); brothers George and Walter (all 3 boys were agricultural labourers; aunt Melinda Bullock and a visitor, Hannah Bullock [8]

1901 census: Aged 24, Elijah had married Betsie Selina TODD (b.23-2-1881) in 1899 (Thingoe Q4-1899 4A:1614a) and was now living with her at Hockwold Street, Wilton. Bessie was 20 and born in Herringswell.

1911 census... Aged 33, Elijah ( a horsekeeper) and Bessie were living at Barton Bendish, Stoke Ferry,Norfolk with their sons, George [8] born in Hockwold, and Horace J [3] born in Barton Bendish. One child had died.

The pension card does not give his widow's address but records the two sons, George Arthur (14-8-1902) and Horace James (10-2-1908)


Dying of his wounds and his Army records not being found, it is impossible to say how or where Elijah was wounded.
